Idebenone - Is It An Effective Anti Wrinkle Ingredient?

Idebenone is an antioxidant that can be found in all aerobic organisms and plays an important role in the production and maintenance of cellular energy.

It has been used for over 25 years as a pharmaceutical, but has on recently become an ingredient in wrinkle cream products. A few skin care companies now market it as a hot, new break-through rather than as older ingredient that's found a new market.

Researchers studied CoQ10 in the 1970-80 for its medicinal benefits, primarily in the areas of heart disease, free radicals and other brain-related disorders. At that time, the researchers prepared numerous versions of the compound. Most proved to be quite ineffective or even unsafe. Idebenone was one of the exceptions and is now often toutes as a "better Co Q10".
In other studies Idebenone has been proven many times more effective than vit E in eliminating free radicals within neurological cells.

Although Idebenone is closely related to CoQ10 in structure, there are several differences making it the better choice for dealing with certain types of free radicals especially resulting damage caused by a lower blood flow.

A published study from 1995 compared the tissue cell-preserving effects of Idebenone and CoQ10. It measured several factors, including lipid and protein damage, production of cellular energy under hypoxia conditions (an oxygen starved environment).

The results proved Idebenone to be superior to Co Q10 at preserving liver tissue that were stored prior to transplant. More recently CoQ10 has been shown to help improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles. As a result, some skin care manufacturers decided that CoQ10 derivatives might provide the same kind of benefit. Howevera lot of work still remains to determine which is better as a wrinkle fighter. Despite their many similarities alot of differences also exist and until there are longer-term comparisons of idebenone and CoQ10 we won’t know which one is better.

This uncertainty is common with new or 'improved' wrinkle cream ingredients. Fortunately this lack of knowledge has mainly to do with its effectiveness rather than its safety. Most researchers agree that this compound is quite safe asa wrinkle cream ingredient. It has been in use use since the 1970s and has maintained a great safety record. It is sold in the US as a supplement in the US without a prescription.

You may want to wait for more studies on idebenone before trying it. As long as you are getting good results using proven anti-wrinkle agents, why switch?. But, if they are not working for you then you might give this product a chance.
It is typically quite expensive, even though idebenone as a stand alone ingredient is not very costly. This is common for aggressively promoted or 'new' treatments, their price will often include a large premium for hype. You might wait until the price comes down or its always an option to make your own idebenone cream. This could ensure a good concentration and freshness, which is very important since the compound breaks down fast in the presence of oxygen.

If you do try it, you might consider doing a side-by-side comparison with CoQ10. You could just apply one to each side of your face and compare the two, but give the ingredients at least six weeks for results.
